One of the water storage lagoons at Al Ansab was drained as part of the construction of the new state of the art MBR Sewage Treatment Plant (See main Haya water page for more details).
This work is now nearing completion and the lagoon has been reinstated. The lagoon bed has been re-profiled to create islands and water levels are now managed to provide optimum conditions for bird species in particular migrant and breeding waders. A viewing hide, soon to be constructed, will provide undisturbed close up views of the birds.
Following the completion of this work a breeding colony of Black-winged Stilts has returned to the wetland in record numbers after several years absence. These beautiful birds successfully raised 30 young this year. This is the only recorded colony in Oman.
Flamingos, Spoonbills and other interesting species of wading birds such as Marsh Sandpiper are also currently visiting the site. Visitors can experience fantastic views of the birds with the help of Haya waters experienced local guides.
